If you're reading this, it means that I finally committed to starting my book blog, and you might even like books too! Exciting stuff!! I have been putting off starting this blog since May of 2017, which is when I graduated from NAU with my shiny English degree and a whole lot of uncertainty about what happens next. To keep moving forward, I'm starting this blog. It's going to take commitment to be consistent (I'm aiming for two posts a week), it's going to take imagination to come up with content, and hopefully, it'll be a fun adventure for me and anyone who stops by. Here's what you can expect from my blog: casual book reviews that focus on craft and narrative, writing tips, and some tidbits about my own personal literary journey. I'm currently employed at a bookstore, which feeds my voracious hunger for books and gives me access to lots of recommendations from customers and coworkers. I will also happily take recommendations from folks who comment on my posts. The more books, the merrier! I hope to cover a range of genres and authors in my reviews, but I do have my favorites: I love good sci-fi/fantasy that explores issues of oppression in empathetic and imaginative ways. I'm a huge sucker for magic in its many forms, whether it simply be the strange and beautiful ways that writers use language, or characters who can pull objects out of their dreams. I'll read a good YA just as eagerly as a literary Pulitzer winner. Heck, I've read books just for their cool covers and you know what? I think that you should judge a book by its cover, because that cover designer made intentional choices about how to grab the reader's attention. But, I digress. I hope to expand my range and explore authors that I could learn a lot from, regardless of genre (though, I admit, I'm a bit of a baby and I might need some hand-holding if I dip my toe into horror). A little about me—I’ve been writing creatively since I was nine, I've been a voracious reader since my Junie B. Jones days, and I hope to have a career in the publishing industry in some capacity, whether that be editing, selling, or promoting beautiful books. I also have that unspoken dream of becoming a best-selling author one day, but I still need to finish a single manuscript. There may be a MFA in creative writing in my future, but for now, I’m focusing on being a person outside of academia. Most of all, I hope this blog serves as a mode for giving me some direction and motivation in my personal literary journey. Even if only a handful of people ever read this, there’s still a lot for me to gain by the act of writing this blog with intention. Writing can sometimes feel like a scary, solitary act, where you’re just shouting feebly into a howling void. I hope this blog shines some light into said void, makes it feel a little less lonely, a little less scary, a little less loud. Here’s to 2018, here’s to my brand new, baby book blog, and here’s to reading in bed at 1:30 A.M. Let’s do this! Finally, some questions for my readers: What are some reading or writing-related topics you'd like to see me address in future posts? Are there any specific books or genres you'd like me to focus on in my reviews? Want to connect on Twitter? You can follow me at @LaurenMKalt.
